These shrinking discs work on steel or aluminum, and the secret to them is they create heat
through friction while touching the metal, and when the area is cooled with either soapy
water or a blower nozzle the heated area shrinks! It is the same concept as using a torch or
stud gun with a solid tip to heat, and a wet rag to cool, but the heat is much more controlled
and only touches the high stretched spots that need to be shrunk. So you are able to shrink
an area on a panel without worrying about making the problem even worse like you can with
a torch. The shrinking disc also works excellent on removing those "oil can" dents that you
have overworked and stretched the metal too much!
Once you have started using the shrinking disc and get a little practice under your belt, it will
make you feel more confident in your metalworking skills when you can finish a panel with no
body filler at all! The more you use it, and the better you get, the less filler you have to
spread and sand! It saves lots of time on sanding, keeps the shop cleaner from having less
putty dust, and makes for a better quality, longer lasting finish with little or no body filler at
all!
In normal conditions, you would tap the dents and low areas up with a hammer and dolly,
make a pass with the shrinking disc, and tap up any remaining low spots before making
another pass. After a few passes your panel with be smooth, and back to normal surface
tension.

| Our shrinking disc is available in 4 1/2" and made to fit 4" or 4 1/2" grinders. It works the same as the 9" disc, but in a smaller size for ease of use for quick shrinking on small areas, areas were the big disc would not fit, or for those of you who do not have a 7/9" grinder. |
| SD458 is for 4" grinders that require attachments with a 5/8" hole. The disc is still 4 1/2". May or may not require a backing pad to seat properly. Depends on your grinder. |
| SD478 has a 7/8" hole, and is for 4 1/2" grinders that have a metric or other odd size spindle thread and will require the use of your own backup pad. This disc also is a replacement disc for our kit. (same disc) |
| SD4kit is for standard 4 1/2" grinders that have 5/8 - 11 spindle thread and use attachments with 7/8" holes. It includes the SD478 disc, a backing pad and 5/8 - 11 threaded spindle nut with the 7/8" alignment step to center the disc. |
